Requests for Permission to Publish Works by Charles Olson

With the purchase of the Charles Olson papers in 1972, the University of Connecticut acquired from the Estate of Charles Olson the literary rights to Charles Olson’s writings that remained unpublished at the time of his death. Additionally, for works by Charles Olson published during his lifetime, the University of Connecticut manages permissions on behalf of the heirs.

Permission to publish or to quote works by Charles Olson must be sought from the University of Connecticut Archives and Special Collections, the unit that administers the rights to Charles Olson’s writings. Permission requests are considered on a case by case basis. Archives and Special Collections will consider requests for the one-time, non-exclusive right to publish work(s) by Charles Olson, upon review of a submitted application.

Requests for permission to publish must comply with conditions and procedures outlined below. Publication fees vary depending on the nature and extent of the materials and the proposed use. Further republication will require reapplication to University of Connecticut Archives and Special Collections.

Permission to publish requests must include the following information:

Identification of the work or portion or excerpt of the work to be published
Proof copy(ies) of manuscript pages including the work
Details regarding extent of rights being sought
Information regarding the planned publication, including publisher, type of publication (for-profit or non-profit), date of publication, and size of the press run
Acknowledgement and acceptance of the following condition: “As the grant of rights to you is non-exclusive, it is understood that the University of Connecticut retains the right to make similar grants of rights to others.”
Acknowledge and acceptance of the following conditions: “Publication of the following copyright statement in the front matter of the publication: The copyright statement is outlined as follows: Works by Charles Olson published during his lifetime are held in copyright by the Estate of Charles Olson; previously unpublished work are copyright of the University of Connecticut. Used with permission.

The literary collections among the holdings of Archives and Special Collections are comprised of the personal papers and manuscripts of over one hundred American and English writers. The bulk of the literary collections include the Charles Olson Research Collection and extensive holdings of papers of poets associated with the Black Mountain, Beat, and New York Schools of poetry.
