Billie M. Levy Travel & Research Grants

In recognition of the substantial contribution Ms. Billie M. Levy has made to the Northeast Children’s Literature Collection (NCLC) and the field of children’s literature, an annual travel and research grant has been established to facilitate the use of the NCLC by worthy applicants. Travel and research grants are intended to encourage use of unique materials in Archives & Special Collections and to provide partial support to researchers who must travel long distances to consult them. Researchers in the vicinity who need financial support in order to undertake a research project using the NCLC are also encouraged to apply. Travel and research grants are awarded on a competitive basis, to promising undergraduate, graduate and post-doctoral students, established scholars, educators, authors and illustrators who plan to conduct research at Archives & Special Collections.

Awards are variable and are made based on a proposed budget.

The grants are awarded on a competitive basis to applicants who are selected by the archivist for the Northeast Children’s Literature Collection, Ms. Billie M. Levy or her designee, and with consultation from UConn faculty. Criteria for selection include the significance of the individual’s research project, candidate’s scholarly research credentials, letters of support, and an identified need to use the Northeast Children’s Literature Collection. Awards are advertised electronically and in printed scholarly publications.

Billie M. Levy Travel and Research Grant recipients agree to conduct research in Archives & Special Collections for the duration of the visit and as indicated in the proposal, describe the research experience, indicating the value of the collections to the research, in a post to be published on the Archives’ web blog written in accordance with Archives & Special Collections editorial guidelines, or in a public lecture arranged in consultation with the Archivist. Posts should be coherent, accurate, at least 1,000 words in length, contain at least three images, include a biographical statement describing the author, and written with a broad readership in mind. All blog entries are reviewed for accuracy and consistency by the Managing Editor of the blog, meet with University faculty to discuss the research if requested.

Applicants should submit the following materials with their application:

  • a brief description (no more than two pages) of the project and a preliminary list of collection materials to be consulted to conduct the research
  • a current resume
  • a proposed budget
  • two letters of support, from appropriate scholars or individuals, attesting to the value of the research

Deadline: Applications are accepted and reviewed once a year. The deadline for submission is January 30 for travel in March – February. Applicants will receive written notification, if their proposal has been approved, within one month of the deadline. Grant funds are paid following completion of the requirements of the grant. A minimum period of eight weeks is necessary to process and deliver the award check.
