Linking to Electronic Materials
Creating links to online resources within HuskyCT rather than uploading PDFs is one way to ensure compliance with copyright law.
Creating Stable Links to Journal Articles
Use the Stable Linking to Electronic Resources guide to find instructions for specific databases.
For a general overview of creating links or for resources not included in the Stable Linking guide, follow the steps below.
Find a stable link (permalink) or DOI for the article
Locate the database-provided permalink or DOI (Digital Object Identifier). Permalinks may be identified through a variety of names:
- Stable URL
- Document URL
- Persistent URL
Paste the permalink after the equal sign in the box below, then copy the entire contents of the box. Add the full link to HuskyCT. Users will be prompted to log in with their NetID through the NetID Single Sign On, ensuring access when off campus.
Note: A small number of databases embed the NetID Single Sign On within the URL. If the link contains ezproxy.lib.uconn.edu, delete that portion of the URL before pasting it in the box below. For example, https://muse.jhu.edu.ezproxy.lib.uconn.edu/book/24965 should be https://muse.jhu.edu/book/24965
If there is no permalink, look for the article’s DOI (Digital Object Identifier). An article’s DOI can be found either in a database or through Crossref *. Paste the DOI after the final slash in the box below, then copy the entire contents of the box. Add the full link to HuskyCT. Users will be prompted to log in with their NetID through the NetID Single Sign On, ensuring access when off campus.
*A DOI will only work for articles that are part of the Library’s subscriptions. DOIs for non-subscribed articles will usually return only an abstract of the article.
**To confirm the link is stable, we recommend you test the completed link in a different browser.
Troubleshooting
- Contact Ask a Librarian for assistance
- Use the guide on stable linking to electronic resources for instructions using specific resources
- Consider providing a citation and link to Google Scholar. When configured, Google Scholar will access UConn Library resources
- Try our troubleshooting guide
Special Note: Harvard Business Review
Harvard Business Review is available via EBSCO’s Business Source Complete. HBR Publishing has a strict license agreement which prohibits downloading and direct linking. To provide access to HBR articles, provide students with the citation and a link to Business Source Complete (https://guides.lib.uconn.edu/BSComplete) where they can search for the article. Alternately, you may request an article be scanned from the print HBR, which can then be uploaded to HuskyCT. Please note on the request that the article will be used for class use / posted on HuskyCT.
The Library does not subscribe to the HBR Case database and cannot provide access to cases.
Locate the permalink for the eBook or online video within the Library’s General Search
Permalinks take students to the item record in General Search, where they will find a link to the eBook or video. This extra step ensures the stability of the links over time.
Troubleshooting
- Contact Ask a Librarian for assistance
- Check our guide on finding media resources in the Library’s General Search
- Windows users should use Windows media player to view the streams; Macintosh users should use the free VLC Video Player
- Do not use remote desktop, Anyware, or the VPN to view videos as they may degrade performance or not play at all.
- Server may not be available from 3-5 a.m. each night due to scheduled system maintenance.
- Determine if your selection complies with copyright and fair use by following these steps.
- Scan your selection, including the title page and the page with the copyright symbol. Scanners are available for use in the library. If the material is owned by the Library, you can request Scan on Demand to scan the chapters for you. Scan on Demand is also available for articles in print journals owned by the Library.
- Scanned items can then be added to HuskyCT
Special Exceptions
- Personal copies must be owned in their original format, i.e. you own a legal copy of a book or are a subscriber to the journal. Possession of a photocopy (e.g., through Interlibrary Loan, borrowed or photocopied from another library’s holdings or from a colleague) does not constitute ownership in the original format.
- Student papers must be accompanied by a signed release form.
