In this video for the exhibition, 25 for 25: Celebrating Twenty-Five Years of Collecting, Clara Nguyen explores a final drawing from the 1993 children’s book We Are All In the Dumps with Jack and Guy. Maurice Sendak assembled this book from two English nursery rhymes, a model he used earlier in the 1965 Hector Protector and As I Went Over the Water. Unlike the 1965 book which treats the two rhymes as two separate narratives, We Are All in the Dumps with Jack and Guy combines both rhymes into one pictorial narrative. This video also explores references to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and James Marshall in the final drawing.
