Off-Campus Access Information

Using Proxy to Access UConn Health Electronic Resources from Off-Campus

Lyman Maynard Stowe Library offers a proxy service which allows access to the Electronic Resources normally restricted by UConn Health IP , e.g., UConn Health Electronic Journals, Electronic Books, and Databases from off-campus sites. The Proxy login page will automatically pop up WHEN and ONLY WHEN the UConn Health subscribed remote resources are accessed from the library site.

We reserve the right to block proxy access for patrons who have overdue/lost items.
Proxy access will be unblocked during regular business hours on Monday-Friday ONLY.

Register for Off-Campus Access

Eligibility

  • Remote access to our library’s resources via our proxy is available only to the following people:
    • UConn Health faculty, staff, and students with a network logon
    • University of Connecticut faculty and students
    • Community or Affliated Faculty at UConn Health with an official faculty appointment

Your name must appear on a list of eligible people sent to our Access Services staff.

Community Faculty must have a faculty appointment from the appropriate UConn Health clinical department (e.g., orthopedics, family medicine etc.) and your name would then appear on one of these lists. (Working with a community faculty person does not make you eligible).

Community Researchers must have prior approval through CICATS and your name must appear on our Community Researcher list.

Unfortunately, our licensing agreements with publishers prevent us from making remote access to our online resources available to other library patrons even if you have a Library barcode. We would be held liable for licensing violations if we were to expand remote access beyond these very strict guidelines. Check with our Access Services department if you have any question about eligibility at (860) 679-3808.

Off Campus / Proxy Registration

If you have a UConn Health network logon, that username and password is all that is required to access proxy. You do not need to register or renew your registration with the Library.

If you are not a member of the UConn Health faculty, staff or students, you must register with the Library and use the Library barcode that is provided to you as well as your last name. To register, either complete the online registration form or contact the Access Services department at 860-679-3808.

Make sure your library registration is up to date. A reminder email is sent prior to your library registration expiration date.

It may take up to 3 business days to process and activate your new or updated account.

Check with our Access Services department if you have any registration questions at (860) 679-3808.

For barcode users, please allow up to three business days to activate your account.

For UConn Health network logon users, proxy access is available immediately without any additional registration.

From off-campus locations or while using the UConnHealth-Guest WiFi:

From the Library Website

  • Go to https://lib.uconn.edu/health/.
  • Select your desired resource(s).
  • If your resource is restricted by UConn Health IP, you will be prompted for a proxy access password.
    • UConn Health users will enter their network username and password in the appropriate boxes.
    • Library barcode users will enter that information (without spaces) and their last name.

If you are on campus, you will not have to go through the login process unless you are using the UConnHealth-Guest Wifi.

1. What is a proxy account?

A proxy account allows access to the Library Electronic Resources normally restricted by UConn Health IP, e.g., Electronic Journals, Electronic Textbooks, and Databases from off-campus sites and from the UConnHealth-Guest WiFi when on campus.

2. Who is eligible for a proxy account?

View eligibility information in the pull-down above.

3. How do I obtain a proxy account?

If you are a UConn Health faculty member, staff or student with a network logon, you are already registered. Use your network logon as your proxy username/password.

If you meet the eligibility requirements but do not have a UConn Health network logon, come to the Library Information Desk, call 860-679-3808 or use the online form to obtain a library barcode. If you’ve already registered with the library, make sure your library registration is up to date. The proxy server login will be your barcode number (no spaces) and your last name. Please allow at least three business days to set up your account. Check with our Access Services department if you have any questions at (860) 679-3808.

4. Do I need to configure my browser?

No.

5. What browsers are supported?

EZProxy is browser independent, i.e., any browser including browsers on mobile devices should work with EZproxy.

6. Do I have to log in every time I want to access resources?

Sessions will last for approximately two hours and then you will be asked to log in again. If you exit your browser or shutdown your computer at any time you will be asked to log in again.

7. I click on a Library resource but the proxy box doesn’t appear.

The resource must be accessed from the Library’s home page https://lib.uconn.edu/health/ to generate the proxy login page and it must be a resource that is restricted by IP. Not all resources on the Library’s home page are restricted.

Additional troubleshooting information is available in the Troubleshooting Tips pull-down below.

8. What do I do if I get a message saying that my proxy login was invalid or incorrect?

If you use a UConn Health network logon to access proxy

  • This is the same username/password used to access email or log into a computer on the UConn Health network.
  • Try to access another UConn Health resource such as email at https://itowa.uchc.edu to test the username/password.
  • If you copy and paste your username/password from a document, be sure to only select the characters that comprise your username/password. Spaces before or after the characters are read as a part of your username/password and will cause it to be invalid.
  • If you are having issues with your username/password, please contact the IT Helpdesk (860) 679-4400.
  • Note: UConn Health students with laptops – If you have changed your password wirelessly from an off-campus site, you will need to plug into the UConn Health network with an Ethernet cable so that the network receives your new password. When changing passwords, it is best to do it on-campus with a wired connection.

If you use a barcode to access proxy

  • The proxy server login is your library barcode number (without spaces) and your last name.
  • If you just registered for the proxy account, please allow at least three business days to activate your account.
  • Make sure your library registration is up to date and you are using your current barcode.
  • Confirm the spelling of your last name, including any spaces, hyphens, etc.
  • If you copy and paste your username/password from a document, be sure to only select the characters that comprise your username/password. Spaces before or after the characters are read as a part of your username/password and will cause it to be invalid.
  • Please check with our Access Services department at (860) 679-3808 for further information.

9. Can I create bookmarks that will utilize proxy to access IP restricted resources?

Yes. To create a bookmark instead of accessing a resource through the Library website, the proxy prefix must be added to the resource’s URL. The prefix that triggers the proxy logon prompt is: https://online.uchc.edu/login?url=

For instance, the URL for PubMed is: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed?holding=uchclib. Add the proxy prefix to this URL and the result would be:
https://online.uchc.edu/login?url=https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed?holding=uchclib

10. Can I access UConn Health Library resources from UConn Health affiliated hospitals?

Yes. You should be able to access UConn Health Library resources from UConn Health affiliated hospitals.

Issues logging into proxy –

The proxy login box doesn’t appear:

The resource must be accessed from the Library’s home page https://lib.uconn.edu/health/ to generate the proxy login page and it must be a resource that is restricted by IP. Not all resources on the Library’s home page are restricted.

You must be off-campus or using the UConnHealth-Guest Wifi network while on-campus for the proxy login page to appear.

Try a different browser, for instance if using Google Chrome, try Internet Explorer instead.

Try a different resource, for instance try PubMed from the Library’s home page https://lib.uconn.edu/health/.

Make sure you have ‘cookies’ enabled.

Internet Explorer: Click on TOOLS > INTERNET OPTIONS> PRIVACY. Set the privacy slider to Medium or lower. Select ADVANCED for additional cookie control.

Be sure your javascript is turned on (browser default).

Javascript needs to be enabled for the proxy service to work.

Internet Explorer: Click on TOOLS> INTERNET OPTIONS> SECURITY> CUSTOM LEVEL. Under SCRIPTING, select ENABLE for all.

Creating bookmarks for use with proxy –

To create a bookmark instead of accessing a resource through the Library website, the proxy prefix must be added to the resource’s URL. The prefix that triggers the proxy logon prompt is: https://online.uchc.edu/login?url=

For instance, the URL for PubMed is: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed?holding=uchclib. Add the proxy prefix to this URL and the result would be:
