Homer Babbidge Library Federal Documents Program

Federal   The University of Connecticut’s Homer Babbidge Library was designated a selective Federal  Document Depository for Connecticut’s second Congressional District in 1907.  The primary mission of the Federal Documents program is to acquire, preserve, and provide access to Federal publications, databases, and other electronic resources, to support the general collecting activities and research needs of the University of Connecticut Libraries, and to serve the government information needs of both the University community and the general public. Historically, the Federal Depository Library Program has been organized and oriented around the distribution of federal documents in print form; the federal government is also now the source of some of the richest, most authoritative information on the World Wide Web.  While the Web has had a profound impact on the dissemination of government information, the retention of print collections for their permanence and, in some cases, superior ease of use will continue to make the depository program an important aspect of the Library’s collections.  Homer Babbidge Library currently selects 60% of the individual classes of Federal Documents available through the Federal Depository Library Program. As one of the very earliest designated depositories in the nation, the Library’s holdings include an exceptionally complete Serial Set and Congressional Record, and other notable collections of Federal Documents. With the exception of items shelved in the Reference collection on level 1, Federal Documents are classified and shelved by Superintendent of Documents call number on Level B.
