Avery Point Library Collections

The library at Avery Point houses the majority of marine science related materials, both books and journals for the University of Connecticut. The collection is designed to support the Graduate program in Marine Sciences and Undergraduate major in Marine Sciences. This collection also supports the Connecticut Sea Grant Program, the National Undersea Research Program, Project Oceanology and the Long Island Sound Resource Center. The Long Island Sound materials are what is called a grey literature collection. Many (1000+) various reports, technical papers, local studies, environmental impact statement, and state documents are included. The database of the collection is here: http://www.lisrc.uconn.edu/lisrc/litsource.asp . Under the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) Avery Point maintains a regional collection of coastal bathymetric charts.

There is also a general collection which supports all undergraduate students. We try to have something to get a student started on any project and then borrow from other libraries. The University of Connecticut Libraries, main campus and 5 regionals, ship items UPS overnight. UConn is a member of the Boston Library Consortium which is composed of 17 of the largest academic libraries in the Northeast corridor and we all ship materials UPS overnight. We also can acquire inter-library loan materials worldwide. A changing aspect of academic libraries including UConn is purchasing online resources. UConn has a large number of electronic books including online reference works and full text online journals. All of these resources can be accessed from off campus with your NetId and password.
