Homer Babbidge Library Connecticut State Documents Collection

The UConn Library has collected state publications throughout its long history and has a significant number of 19th and 20th century imprints. In 1978, the University’s Homer Babbidge Library was designated a Depository for Connecticut State Documents in 1978 in accordance with State Statute and has a mandate to collect, preserve, and provide access to Connecticut State Documents of enduring value. Containing over 15,000 volumes and extending back to the late 1700’s, the collection is the second in size only to that of the State Library. The Connecticut State Documents collection at the Homer Babbidge Library is primarily a print collection, though it also includes video, microform, map, and electronic formats.

Except for those select items contained in the Babbidge Reference Collection, Media Library and Map Library, the Connecticut State Documents collection is housed on Level B of the Babbidge Library, classified by issuing agency. Most items in the collection have been cataloged and are accessible via the University Library’s online discovery layer. Collection Development — UConn Library continues to add Connecticut State documents received through the Connecticut State Depository system, including Agency reports, bulletins, and series; special commission and task-force reports; and other occasional publications of significance. The UConn Library does not collect newsletters, job postings or job announcements, calendars, posters, pamphlets or other ephemeral or current awareness titles that can be easily found on the web.

To facilitate access to state information on the Web, the UConn Library maintains the Connecticut State Documents by Title web page for the benefit of all Connecticut citizens. The UConn Library also collects Connecticut Town Annual Reports. These are shelved at the end of the Connecticut State Documents collection on Level B of the Homer Babbidge Library. The UConn Library develops the Town Reports collection through letters of request sent to each of the 169 town clerks every three or four years and publishes the holdings of this collection on a web page entitled Connecticut Town Annual Reports.
