About the Libraries

The University of Connecticut Libraries form the largest public research collection in the state. The collection contains over 2.5 million volumes, 9,000 currently received print periodicals, over 25,000 electronic journals, 2.8 million units of microform, 35,000 reference sources, 180,000 maps and an array of electronic information sources, many of which contain the full text of research journals, monographs, and historic documents.

The University of Connecticut Libraries have a longstanding membership in the Association of Research Libraries, participate in the Northeast Research Libraries Consortium, and, since 2002, have been active members of the Boston Library Consortium, the premier research library collective in New England. The Homer Babbidge Library, the main library on the Storrs campus, was rededicated in the fall of 1998 after a $40 million facilities and infrastructure renovation including the creation of an electronic information center that supports new research, teaching and learning styles. Private giving has allowed the Libraries to offer state-of-the-art electronic classrooms and media facilities, including wireless capabilities.

The Libraries employ the Endeavor Information Systems Voyager integrated library system and were among the first academic libraries internationally to install ENCompass Solutions. The Libraries have purchased Checkpoint Systems’ radio frequency identification (RFID) security system and are the largest academic library in North America to feature RFID technology for collections maintenance and control.

Featuring its own server farm, electronic course reserves through WebCT, web-based information literacy modules, web-based electronic document delivery services, and an internationally acclaimed GIS program, the UConn Libraries are technologically proficient. The Libraries’ Connecticut History Online digital collections project, including a digital gazetteer, has been cited by the Executive Director of the Institute of Museum and Library Services as one of the best examples of museum/library collaboration in the digital environment.

In 2002-2003 the library expenditures were approximately $13 million. There are 107 permanent full-time equivalent staff members, supplemented by 62 full-time equivalent student assistants. In a recent survey of UConn students and faculty, 92 percent of the respondents indicated strong overall satisfaction with library services.
