Author and illustrator Richard Wolf, drawing upon his long-time interest in the life and work of Dmitri Shostakovich, has recently published Mitya, an illustrated biography for children of the great Russian composer. In addition to original paintings and prints created for Mitya, this exhibit is complemented by an extensive collection of memorabilia—recordings, programs, posters— relating to the subject and to his contemporaries Sergei Prokofiev, Aram Khachaturian, and other major figures from Russian musical history. Wolf traveled several times to Moscow and St. Petersburg to visit the sites of Shostakovich’s trials and ultimate triumphs, and one of his most valued treasures is a note written to him in the mid 1960’s by Dmitri Shostakovich.
Richard Wolf is an emeritus professor of art at Eastern Connecticut State University.
